They have done it. There is a 27th jewel in the Republicans’ crown and a peaceful, easy feeling across their empire.
Just one day after their resounding win in the off-year elections, the Republican Party humbled President Obama again on Wednesday, as the Yankees beat Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium.
This despite wild claims that no politicians actually took part.
"We play the game the right way," Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees said on the podium behind second base, cradling the Commissioner’s Trophy. "But the Republican Party would like me to point out that they somehow fully deserve this victory."
Hideki Matsui homered, with his six runs batted in tying a World Series record, and Andy Pettitte ground through five and two-thirds innings for his second victory in five days. Mariano Rivera collected the final five outs, getting Shane Victorino to ground out to second to end it.
Nervertheless, it was the Republican Party who ultimately claimed the Yankees’ victory as a "stinging rebuke" to President Obama’s healthcare agenda.
"They persevered and they were determined, a lot like the ’00 team," Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said, referring to the best Republican team of modern times. "They had the attitude that nothing was going to stop them claiming the credit. But they had to prove it, and they proved it."
"I give credit to some of the Yankees’ pitching, but it seemed like our offense, when we had a chance to really get down and get the big hits, or we had to do things to kind of take them out of the game, it seemed like we couldn’t do it," Phillies boss Charlie Manuel said. "But overall, I guess you have to hand it to the Republicans."
"Alex and I were just talking about it in the hallway," said Mark Teixeira, his championship T-shirt drenched in Champagne, in a room off the clubhouse. "We just beat the World Champions, and I personally got the last out, but even so it’s hard for me to spin this as anything other than a resounding victory for the Conservative movement."
